Courses
I teach a two-day course, How to Read Like a Writer, at University of Victoria, Division of Continuing Studies. We read and discuss excerpts from novels, memoirs and travelogues from a wide range of notable authors, including Kate Atkinson, David Foster Wallace, Alain de Botton, Raymond Chandler and Charles Dickens. The last class was held in October 2011. The next one will happen in the spring of 2012. Check out the UVic calendar here.
“I enjoyed the two How To Read Like a Writer sessions immensely. Thanks for making the past two classes so enjoyable; I learned a lot about reading and writing, and also about the works of writers who were previously only vaguely familiar to me.”

Ever wonder what makes a good ghost story work? You can find out in Read Like a Writer: Classic Ghost Stories. The last class was held the day before Halloween, October 2010. This year we’re meeting two days before the hallowed eve, on October 29. Find out more.
Want to Learn to Write Great Blog Posts? I taught this course at Camosun College in the fall of 2010.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the Learn to Write Great Blog Posts course. I found Sharleen to be a dynamic, engaging, and personable instructor who made me feel comfortable enough to take creative risks and accept constructive criticism. Taking this course has improved my writing skill and ability to produce a blog that is at once a creative outlet and interesting to a wide audience. I would enthusiastically welcome the opportunity to take another writing course with Sharleen.”
